Halloween: The Halloween parade will begin at 9:00a.m. Parents are welcome to come and watch. Our Halloween party is from 11:15-12:20p.m. Remember that it is a short day. Students will be excused at 1:55p.m.
Math: We are focusing on division this week. Something that helps students remember the steps to division is the acronym Does McDonalds Sell Cheese Burgers (1. Divide, 2. Multiply, Subtract, Check, and Bring down the next number)? If they get stuck doing a division problem at home, remind them of this.
We are learning 2 different ways to do long division. Below is another way. Your children can solve their division problems any way they want. The problem below is 137/3. Students can choose any number of times they think 3 will go into 137. In the example below the child thought 3 would go at least 30 times so they wrote 30 to the side and multiplied 3x30 and then subtracted. They then decided that 3 could go into 47 at least 10 times. So they wrote 10 to the side, multiplied 10x3 and subtracted 30 from 47. Finally they knew 3 could go into 17 5 times, so they wrote 5 to the side, multiplied 5x3 and got a remainder 2.
      _____ 3
    137 30
   - 90
    _____
    47 10
   -30
      _____
     17 5
    -15
        ____
      2
Add up all the numbers off to the side: 30 + 10 + 5 = 45 then add the remainder at the bottom which is 2. So the answer is 45r2. If your child is having a hard time solving division problems the basic way, try teaching them the way I described above.
Writing: Students are writing persuasive papers about Frankenstein and Halloween poems.
Reading: We are working on summarizing short stories. Weekly reading minutes are always due on Tuesday. Students must write the number of minutes they read each day and total the minutes for the week. Parents must sign each week.
