May 23-27

Remember next Monday there is no school due to Memorial Day!

Math: We are studying measurement and elapsed time. Students will have math homework every day this week but Friday.

Spelling: There is no more spelling this year!

Writing: We are finishing our 4 page research papers this week. Students are given 2 hours in class to research and write each page. If they do not finish in class, they will have to finish at home. The pages must be in their OWN words and each source they use must be listed on their resources page. Last week they wrote one page on the history and another on places to go in their state. This week they will be writing one page on the people and another on the climate, geography, and interesting facts.

State Presentations: Students must complete a rough draft of their state poster by Thursday. They will then receive their final draft poster. Next week students will be giving a 5-6 minute presentation on their state. Their research paper and poster must be finished by Wednesday June 1st. Presentations will be Wed. June 1st and Thurs. June 2nd from 9:30-10:35a.m. If you would like to attend your child's presentation, you may do so. There is to be NO reading of the information. (They are welcome to bring in pictures, books, artifacts, displays, food to share (store bought), etc. about or from their state. These items are not necessary but the students will be given extra credit if they go the extra mile.

The State Parade: Students will be required to make a float for the State Parade. The parade will be on Friday June 3rd from 9:15-9:40a.m. The floats can be made out of anything that has wheels. Your student can use coolers with wheels, strollers, wagons, skateboards, kiddie shopping carts etc... The float has to have the name of the state, information about the crops, products, or anything that would show about tourist attractions. We are asking the parents to bring the floats and then take them home after. If necessary we can keep them at school until the end of the day, but we really don't have room for them. This is a fun activity and a great way to culminate our year of states and U.S. history.

Social Studies: Students will be taking the 50 states test this Friday. They must know each state, capital, and abbreviation and be able to match each to a map. Please make sure they study some time every night. I am giving them time to study in class each day.

Math: We will be reviewing and also starting a new math unit in measurement and elapsed time. Students will only have homework on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Writing: Students are starting a research paper on the state of their choice. I will give them some time in class to look up information about their state, but they may need to print off some material at home. This week students will write one page on the history this Tuesday and another page about the things to see and do on Thursday. They will be given 1 hour in class to write each page. If they do not finish within the given time, they will have to finish at home. I have made it clear that students are to write these pages in their OWN words. Some helpful websites to find information about their states are:

Social Studies: Students will be filling out a study guide Monday and Tuesday for the 50 states test. They will be required to know all 50 states and match them to a map, know the capitals, and abbreviations. They have already been tested on all of these states by section so this should just be a review. Please make sure your child spends some time each day studying. The test will be Friday May 27th.
