December 13-17

This is the last week of school this year!!! Christmas break begins December 20 and ends January 3rd. Have a very merry Christmas! See ya in 2011!

Math: This week we are focusing on algebraic expressions, the distributive property, finding the rule, and two digit division. Students will have homework every day but Friday.

Spelling/Language: We are still studying comma rules. This week is Christmas spelling. The spelling packet is due and the test is Friday. The words are: Christmas, carols, cookies, merry, bell, starts, toy, pinata, sled, cold, elf, gifts, nuts, angel, wreath, chimney, Santa, Claus, package, candy cane, tree, and decorate.

Reading: The book report for December is due Thursday December 16th. This month students could pick any book that was at least 150 pages in any genre. They have a quick book report project that should take around 1 hour to complete.

We are also completing "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" Students will watch the movie in class Wednesday afternoon.

Social Studies: We are still studying the Revolutionary War! Ask your child about taxes:)

The Christmas sing along is Friday. Parents are not invited then due to spacing problems. The 5th graders will perform their Christmas songs for parents Wednesday morning from 9:15-9:30a.m. or at 1:15p.m. in the gym.

December 6-11

Operation Smile: Please donate to Operation Smile. Any money you can spare is greatly appreciated. Our school has a goal to earn enough for 3 smiles...or 750 dollars total. We can reach this goal if each child donates at least $1.50. Send money in an envelope.

Math: This week we are covering Order of Operations and Algebraic Expressions. Students will have homework every night Monday-Thursday.

Reading: This month's book report is any genre. Students must select a book that is close to 150 pages. They are making a paper sandwich for the project. Students received all the parts to the sandwich last Friday, only they must make the bread from paper. On the front piece of bread they must have the book title, author, their name, and a neatly drawn and colored picture. The book report is due December 16th.

Spelling: The spelling packet is due and the test will be taken this Friday. The spelling words this week are: vote, zone, known, follow, alone, microscope, arrow, grown, borrow, swallow, tomorrow, telephone, code, suppose, chose, sew, throw, bowl, owe, and elbow. We are focusing on 3 ways to make the long o sound...o-consonant-e, ow, and ew. Look at the side bar for ideas to make studying fun.

Writing: We will be finishing our letters to Santa and starting winter poems.

Social Studies: We are focusing on the American Revolution.
