Almost Spring Break!!

Math: We will have math homework on Monday and Tuesday of this week. On Monday we are estimating sums and differences of whole numbers by rounding to the nearest whole number. On Tuesday we will be adding mixed numbers.

Writing: We are working on pre-writes for narrative stories

Spelling: There is no spelling this week!

Social Studies: We are continuing our Pre Civil War Unit. On Friday we will reenact a typical slave trade. Students will be asked to play the parts of slaves, plantation owners, abolitionists, and auctioneer.

On Friday we will have a Read-a-thon in the morning and then game day after recess.

Remember that Friday is early out day!!! That means school ends at 1:40pm. Students will not return to school until April 6.

Monday, March 22, 2010

March 22-26

Math: Chapter 7 test is on Tuesday. We will start chapter 8 on Wednesday. Students will continue working with fractions. This week they will learn to subtract and add like denominators, find the least common denominators, and subtract and add unlike denominators.

Writing: We are beginning a unit on narrative writing. Students will pre-write by identifying the following:
1. Who (the main character(s) and setting
2. Wants
3. But (the problem that keeps them from getting what they want)
4. Then (what they do to overcome the problem)
5. Finally (how it ends)

Social Studies: We will be taking the unit test on The West this Wednesday the 24th of March. Students have a study guide. If they know the material on the guide, they will do very well on the test. We are also starting a unit Thursday on Pre-Civil War.

March 15-19

Math: We are finishing chapter 7 and will take the test Tuesday March 23. Make sure to save your math worksheets so that you can use them to study.

Social Studies: This week we will be learning about the Industrial Revolution, The Alamo, trails west, the Oregon Trial, kids in the goldfields, and coast to coast communication. Students will take a test on The West next Wednesday.

Reading: Book reports are due this Friday. Students must write a five paragraph persuasive paper on why we should read or not read the book they chose. They must follow the four-square writing method they have learned in class.

P.E.: We will be starting a dance unit this Thursday. Tuesday is always fitness day. Students must come prepared to run and perform other fitness activities.

Maturation: This week all boys and girls will have maturation. Students are required to attend. Parents are invited. You should have received a notice in the mail.

March 8-12

Math: We are continuing our unit on fractions. Students will have homework every day this week.

Science: We have finished our unit on Chemistry. Science experiments 5-7 are due on Wednesday. Experiment 7 is extra credit. Also, we have a chemistry test this Friday. Students must study their study guide and vocabulary words.

Social Studies: This week we are learning about the Trail of Tears, Indians, The Industrial Revolution, and the Alamo.

Spelling: Spelling has been changed. There are now 3 spelling groups in order to meet student needs. Words will no longer be posted on the blog.

March 1-5

Math: We are continuing our unit on fractions. Monday 7-6, Tuesday 7-7, Wednesday 7-8, and Thursday 7-9. Each night students will have math homework.

Writing: Students will be taking the DWA state-wide writing assessment this Wednesday. The highest score they can get is 30. They need a score of 15 to pass.

Reading: Students should finish reading their book report books by Thursday. They will then write a 5 paragraph persuasive paper, following the four-square writing method we have been learning in class, about why we should or should not read the book.

Science: We will be finishing up our Chemistry unit this week and will take the Chemistry test next week sometime. Students have a study guide. If they know the material on the guide, they will do well on the test. The 3rd and 4th science experiments are due on Wednesday the 3rd.

Social Studies: We are beginning our unit on the West. We will be learning about people such as Daniel Boone, Lewis and Clark, and Thomas Jefferson. We will discuss the Louisiana Purchase, frontier travel, the War of 1812, and the Star-Spangled Banner.

P.E.: We will be starting a dance unit this Thursday. Tuesdays are always fitness days. Students should wear shoes they can run in.

Parent-teacher conferences are this Wednesday 4:30-8pm and Thursday 3:30-7pm. Please schedule time to come one of these two evenings.
